Chapter 5 - Step Back in Time
Deliberative engagements have the potential to contribute to a more deliberative democratic society
Codesign and deliberative engagements come from different traditions. Codesign is more common in management and public-sector innovation, while deliberative engagements are rooted in political philosophy.
Deliberative engagements focus on theoretical aspects and legitimacy, aiming for policy options acceptable to the public. Codesign emphasizes practical tools and effective delivery of shared outcomes through services and systems, sometimes including policy and legislative decisions.
Codesign is best for understanding specific experiences, especially those with lived or professional expertise, where knowledge is unknown, and creative solutions are needed.
Deliberative engagements are best for determining shared preferences and priorities among citizens, where knowledge is somewhat known, and solutions require critical examination of evidence.
